Bewley's Christmas Exhibition

What a great days shooting we had with the team in Bewleys Cafe - a really great group of people and the students from Johnstown primary school. Both adults and children needed to work really hard for the camera, being happy, sad, angry and funny. And everyone was terrific. There are definitely a few gurning champions here. A selection of the portraits were part of the 'Mirror, mirror' installation in Bewley's Cafe window this Christmas, one part of a great exhibition of scenarios 'Once upon a Thumb' by the sculptor Paddy Campbell. You can still see them up until the 6th of January. And well worth the visit. Some details from the scenarios can be seen below.

A Series of Salad Labels for Tesco Finest.

This was a lovely shoot to be involved with. Using the ingredients again to compose some lovely, fresh and natural looking labels. The ingredient lists were great and gave us some nice colour and composition options during the shoot. The labels wrap around the transparent salad containers so you can see what you are buying.

Tasty Paté Selection

A nice series of shots here for Dunnes Stores Paté. Photographing just the ingredients of each of the patés and creating a rustic and wholesome mood in each studio set up. Nice to find and use forest mushrooms in season for one of the shots. And slices of carmelised orange. And brandy. Brandy? I ask ye. Lovely to photograph and lovely to eat.

Tesco Finest Whole Grain Bread Labels

Together with Tesco's hard working design team we came up with a series of labels for the Tesco Finest range of whole grain breads. Using each loafs' unique ingredients to identify the different labels,
we kept a simple rustic theme running through the different packs. The bakers chose a really interesting selection of grains and seeds for each loafs ingredients. And tasty too.

New Jameson Branded Glassware.

We had fun in the studio recently shooting this new Jameson branded glassware for Pernod Ricard Irish Distillers. A very tricky assignment capturing the etched logo and reflections on the glass interiors and on glass base. But doesn't it look very well in the finish?

James Joyce's Dubliners - Audio Walk through Dublin.

What a smashing idea from Wonderderland Productions - an audio walk through the streets of Dublin with James Joyce's Dubliners. Read by a bevy of very fine actors. We had fun shooting the actors on Henrietta Street recently. With the cast fully dressed in their Edwardian clothes. You can still pick up a head set from the Dublin Writers Museum and take a stroll yourself. Lovely.

Whats my Titanic Story?

With all the talk about the Titanic Centenary I was reminded of a shoot I did a few years back for Irish whiskey makers, Irish Distillers Limited. It was a shot of Morrissey's of Abbeyleix for a Barcelona based  advertising agency.  If you are ever passing you must visit - it is a wonderful pub. We spent some time setting up and shooting this iconic pub. As I was shooting a local man came up and told us the day was the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. And at that time, 1912,  Morrissey's was not only the local undertaker, auctioneer and grocery shop but also ticket agent for the White Star Line, owners of the Titanic.

The Secret of the Plump Pancake

If you didn't get the recent flyer with the recipe for the plump pancake and blueberries - fear not. Here it is, in all its glory.
The Ingredients:
200g Self raising flour.
3 Eggs
500mls Milk
1 Tablespoon sugar & pinch of salt
300g Blueberries

The Method. Rinse blueberries and leave to dry. Sieve the flour into a bowl. Mix in sugar and salt. The Secret. Separate the egg white from the yokes. Pop the yokes into the flour and mix. Slowly add in the milk. Whisk the egg whites until stiff then fold it into the batter. Using a medium sized ladle, scoop up a small portion of batter and add a hand full of blueberries to it. The Magic. Gently pour this onto a hot oiled pan. Fry each side until golden. Remove from pan and dust with a little icing sugar. Yum, yum, yum.

LOVELY HANDMADE BURGERS WITH PANACHE.

The Epicurean Food Hall on Abbey St. in Dublin is now home to Byrne's Handcrafted Burgers.
The meat arrives to the kitchen in joints and is minced and prepared on site. You can watch if you like that sort of thing and see the butcher's blocks and the other traditional fittings. All the are ingredients natural and wholesome. And all backed with years of knowledge gained as a Master Butcher and Restauranteur. You can even order a beer with your food - how civilised. The burger above is the cranberry, brie and bacon. Lovely.

Irish Dairy Board Shoot

Working with the Irish Dairy Board - who produce and market Kerrygold amongst many other dairy products - I photographed a series of set ups involving people and food. It was a challenging assignment, working with the client and food stylist we came up with a series of scenarios and recipes with people enjoying different occasions. We used a large amount of models, all of which I sourced for each set up and photographed them in various locations around Dublin. (And no, that's not Naples but beautiful Howth in the intro' shot above.)

Peas Please!

I'd never seen a field of peas before until Batchelors asked me to photograph one of their ‘pea’ suppliers farms. It was a fun but tough assignment. A farm growing 35 acres of peas that had just come into flower. You might remember that the weather last summer was atrocious. The delicate flowers were getting a battering from the unclement wind and rain. Luck was on our side. We got a chink in the weather and I spent a late afternoon and a sunrise morning shooting the impressive crop before the clouds came back and sucked all the light away.

2011 Presidential Campaign.

I was delighted to be asked to photograph Michael D. Higgins during his successful campaign for the President of Ireland. We spent some interesting time together on location and in studio. A lovely man to work with. The cream for me was having one of the portraits used on his latest book - Renewing the Republic - http://www.libertiespress.com
Here are some more portraits we shot during the campaign.
