Horta Writing Centre

Being dragged away to a spectacular location two hours inland from Barcelona could hardly be deemed a chore. Thats what happened last September. Fours days shooting in a most beautiful location - Horta de Sant Joan. The sun shone throughout the whole experience, lighting up the rocky mountains, the vineyards, the olive groves. Stupendous. Meeting the very friendly and extremely helpful people from the town was an unexpected bonus, they helped us out in every way they could. The project was shot for a creative writing centre - http://www.hortawriting.com - which has recently opened their school and guest house to visitors. Well worth checking out. And look at their impressive list of tutors.

Fresh Fruit

A lovely selection of labels for Dunnes Stores Yogurts. It is nice to get such lovely subject matter to photograph. Not that all the fruit was in season at the time of shooting. Nevertheless we got a lovely series of close up images that could appear on any poster as well as their intended labels.

Green Dragon 'Round the World' Racing Yacht

During a year of many highs this particular project stood out. Sailing on the Green Dragon for three days in Dublin Bay and then off to Galway and sail out to the Aran Islands, down to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher and back to over night in the never ending party town of Galway. It was terrific. We had all weathers over the four trips - calm and sunny to blustery winds with rain. The boat itself is an equivalent, in motoring terms, to a formula one racing car - very big at 21m, but sparse with little in terms of human comfort- this is a racing machine. She successfully sailed around the world in the 2008/09  Volvo Ocean Race.

A Brisk Day at the Beach.

A storm force wind is blowing. The sun is shining. And I'm walking on Portmarnock beach, just north of the city of Dublin. What a view. The Martello tower on Ireland's Eye is half lit by bright sunlight. Flocks of brent geese and oyster catchers struggle in the breeze. A fishing boat heads for the safety of Howth Harbour before the worst of the storm.

Eh! No, actually.

The photograph is made up of 10 different photographs. (Mainly shot on a Canon Eos 1DS Mk iii.)The back ground of sea, sky and island is a panoramic photograph made up of 4 different shots joined together using Photoshop:

The 2 flocks of birds were shot at the same occasion but are made up of 4 different photographs.

Each bird was cut out of the background and then dropped into the final seascape.

The little fishing boat being thrown about by a rough sea and strong winds was actually photographed 250km away, on the Atlantic coast a week later, in much calmer conditions with a nifty little snap camera - Canon G12.

And the boat's wake in the final photograph was made up of a composite of waves from the original shot.
And hey presto! Can we believe anything in a photograph?

National Digital Research Centre Annual Report.

The NDRC is an amazing organisation. It supports digital entrepreneurs both on the technical and business end and all the way to venture capital - supporting new innovative digital projects. It was a joy photographing the different and talented people in their offices in the Digital Hub, a location full of atmosphere and enthusiasm. Above is a selection of some of the photographic spreads from the recent annual report. The full report is available on the NDRC website where more of the photography we shot is used to great effect.

O2 Christmas Campaign.

We spent some time photographing a range of mobile phones and accessories for O2 again this year. Mobile phones are technically challenging. Their reflective surfaces don't make the job easy and add to that the different types of reflective surfaces on a single phone; red ones, black ones, glass and metal, all make for an even more entertaining days work.
But thats what we are here for - we just love a challenge.
