Portrait exhibition gets second airing.

The award winning portraits I did for last years Phizzfest - Phibsborough Arts Festival,
are being shown again in Woodstock Cafe, 156 Phibsborough Rd., Dublin 7, on invitation from Phizzfest 2011.
The feedback last year was over whelming and I am delighted to have the opportunity to show the work again. It is an on going project and nine new portraits are been shown for the first time at this event.

New O2 Modem Campaign.

It was interesting to see the final use of the modem shot I did for O2 recently. Such clever use of a marker to give a sense of the dynamic to the simple shot. The power of the magic marker.

Michaél Ó Muircheartaigh- Portrait of a legend.

A definite highlight for me in 2010 was to get the opportunity to take the portrait of one of Ireland's living legends - Michaél Ó Muircheartaigh on his retirement as Gaelic Games commentator for Irish TV and radio. Now eighty years old, at the time of the portrait, Michaél's warmth was immediately apparent. We used the magnificent Croke Park for our location, where he first commentated on a Railway Cup Final on St Patricks Day 1949. It was an honour for me to spend some time with Michaél.
The final portraits were used for the cover of The Croke Park Annual 2010, and to illustrate the accompanying article.

My favourite Michaél Ó quote:  'Sean Óg Ó hAilpin... his father is from Fermanagh. His mother is from Fiji - neither a hurling stronghold.'

O2 Mobile Phone Christmas Campaign.

I was delighted to be chosen to shoot a range new mobile phones for O2 for their Christmas 2010 campaign. Mobile phones are very tricky little items to photograph - think of photographing a mirrored box with all lights showing and all information on screen legible. Very satisfying though, when we squeeze the very best, visually, out of each phone. Here are a few examples:

2 Bronze Medals for International Aperture Photographic Award

Yippee. I've won two bronze awards for 2 portraits I entred into the 2010 International Aperture Awards - withentries from 91 different countries. Two out of three portraits I entred won bronze - they all should have won gold or platinum but there you go! PORTRAIT EXHIBITION

I've just put up a series of 12 portraits from my local area on display for Phizzfest - The inaugural Phibsborough Art Festival. ( Check out their great programme at - http://www.phizzfest.ie  )
Using Patrick Kavanagh's poem 'Epic' as a starting block I photographed my neighbours and local business men. These portraits hang with an amazingly diverse selection of other artists work.  It is happening on the 3rd floor of the tower in Phibsborough shopping centre - opening hours between 6 and 8pm each evening (except Thursday opening night for more events.) Also over next weekend 10am to 5pm. Well worth a visit.

Small World.

   If you have a moment for a coffee in Bewleys I recommend you to visit the current exhibition in Bewleys Cafe Theatre. Small World is the creation of Paddy Campbell - successful business man turned sculpture and artist. A series of everyday scenarios, cafe scene, beach scene, train carriage and so on, are recreated in one third life size scale. Beautifully quirky. The individual sculptures come alive when you peek in on them from different vantage points. I spent 2 days working with Paddy photographing the different sets. The photographs were used for a beautiful catalogue, invitations, posters and banners.

Passion and Politics

The latest exhibition to open in the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, Passion and Politics, opened recently, showing the work of Sir John Lavery. I photographed the £100 note that is now been used all around the city to publicise the event. A very large high resolution file was produced and supplied to the design team working on invites, banners and large format posters as well as the exhibition catalogue. Highly colour critical images of a selection of Lavery's portraits were supplied also for the catalogue.

 Go visit this historically, very interesting exhibition and see if you don't melt under the eyes of the beautiful and prototype celebrity Lady Lavery.

Latest IPUT Annual Report

Irish Property Unit Trust (IPUT) recently published their latest annual report. They spotted the Samuel Beckett Bridge photograph from my earlier blogs(see below) and used it to great affect on the cover. For the rest of the  photography - both people and architectural - I was commissioned and other photography from archives that I shot for IPUT over recent years.

Good Photography and Design definitely pays off.

When Musgrave Food Services called me in to supply photography for their newly updated packaging on a range of mayonnaise and sauces, they were in for a big suprise. Without an iota of promotion or advertising the new packaging replaced the old design on their Cash and Carry shelves. Product sales immediately increased by 60% and some items sold out completely. Not only that, but all the photography had multiple uses also; on the web site, in brochures, promotional leaflets, point of sale... Proof, if needed, that good photography and design pays off - big time.

Snow cloud burst over Dublin Bay

A brisk walk down The Bull Wall on the north side of the city gave me a great vantage point to watch this snowy cloud burst over the city. It was cold and very windy but really invigorating.

CLG launch their new brochure

CLG is one of Irelands leading construction and civil engineering companies with a portfolio that is the envy of many of its competitors. Celebrating 30 years of business, I got the opportunity to photograph many of their completed and ongoing projects. It was challenging both from a weather point of view - we were photographing through one of the wettest summers for years and shooting at construction sites where we had no control over the set up of the shots and we had to shoot under strict safety conditions. The new brochure celebrating 30 years of success looks really well. Here’s to the next 30 years of success.

BUYING A DIGITAL CAMERA?

If you are buying a digital camera for Christmas I recommend 3 things you should look out for - presuming the camera gives you at least 7 or 8 megapixels sized images - which most cameras are capable of now.

1. When you press the shutter the camera should respond immediately.

On some digital cameras - all brands and makes - when you press the button to take the shot there is a delay and the person you meant to photograph has already turned away...

Or you miss the split second moment...

Or you miss the woman giving my daughter’s boots a dirty look at a Monet exhibition...

2. Make sure the viewing screen is as large as possible.

So you can check more accurately that your photograph is in focus, eyes are open and smiles in position...

3. Make sure it is small enough for you to carry comfortably.  

And after that its down to cash. I'm using a Canon Powershot G11 for my street and holiday shots and so far it is working out well.

Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane

If you haven't been to the Francis Bacon exhibition 'A Terrible Beauty' in the Hugh Lane in Dublin - it is well worth a visit.
I did some of the photography of the artifacts in the beautiful catalogue - very demanding in a technical sense - as the colour rendition is of primary importance and every care and detail was taken during the shoot.

I've had the pleasure of working on other recent exhibitions at the Hugh Lane. The celebration of the centenary of the founding of the first modern art gallery in Dublin - now Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, produced a very beautiful coffee table book with a series of very interesting articles on different aspects of the gallery. All the gallery interiors and exterior photography, shot by myself, was beautifully reproduced as full and double page spreads.

The recent exhibition 'The Quick and the Dead' allowed me to visit the four featured artists and photograph them and their studios. The book of the exhibition is a tastefully designed production on a high quality recycled paper and looks and feels great. What great presents these books would make over Christmas - the gallery book shop can sort you out.

Garden Grotto.

I was driving past PJ McElverly's house outside Athlone, Co Westmeath, when I spotted his wonderful garden grotto.I called into him and was welcomed with great hospitality. He has a strong belief in the Blessed Virgin Mary and built the grotto in 2004 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Marian Year 1954 - that was the year his own parents built their own grotto in their garden.

Nicholas Mosse Pottery

Recently I had the pleasure of working on a project with akgraphics - www.akgraphics.ie who commissioned me to take pictures for Nicholas Mosse Pottery. I spent the best part of a day photographing in the amazing mill at Bennettsbridge. Nicholas Mosse Pottery have converted the picturesque mill into a pottery studio, a retail outlet and a lovely restaurant where we had a lovely lunch. Here are a few shots showing how they ended up being used.

Duncan Brickenden portrait session

Duncan Brickenden is a talented young singer that came into the studio recently for a series of portraits. He sings countertenor and has a voice like honey. He recently travelled to Canada to continue his studies in music. 

Not only is he a handsome git but he has charm, focus and talent to boot. The best of luck to him.

Look out for concert appearances in Dublin in December 2009.

The new Samuel Beckett Bridge, Dublin.

Have you seen the new Samuel Beckett Bridge on the River Liffey yet? It looks spectacular. Designed by 'superstar' architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. The whole thing was floated across the sea from The Netherlands earlier this year and is now in position although it is still a building site. To allow ships to pass it will swing to 90º on a pivot close to the south bank of the river. The shape and lines are very elegant. From the river view the bridge takes on the look of a harp which seems an appropriate echo of our national symbol. See what you think.
