The Secret of the Plump Pancake

If you didn't get the recent flyer with the recipe for the plump pancake and blueberries - fear not. Here it is, in all its glory.
The Ingredients:
200g Self raising flour.
3 Eggs
500mls Milk
1 Tablespoon sugar & pinch of salt
300g Blueberries


The Method. Rinse blueberries and leave to dry. Sieve the flour into a bowl. Mix in sugar and salt. The Secret. Separate the egg white from the yokes. Pop the yokes into the flour and mix. Slowly add in the milk. Whisk the egg whites until stiff then fold it into the batter. Using a medium sized ladle, scoop up a small portion of batter and add a hand full of blueberries to it. The Magic. Gently pour this onto a hot oiled pan. Fry each side until golden. Remove from pan and dust with a little icing sugar. Yum, yum, yum.

LOVELY HANDMADE BURGERS WITH PANACHE.

The Epicurean Food Hall on Abbey St. in Dublin is now home to Byrne's Handcrafted Burgers.
The meat arrives to the kitchen in joints and is minced and prepared on site. You can watch if you like that sort of thing and see the butcher's blocks and the other traditional fittings. All the are ingredients natural and wholesome. And all backed with years of knowledge gained as a Master Butcher and Restauranteur. You can even order a beer with your food - how civilised. The burger above is the cranberry, brie and bacon. Lovely.

Irish Dairy Board Shoot

Working with the Irish Dairy Board - who produce and market Kerrygold amongst many other dairy products - I photographed a series of set ups involving people and food. It was a challenging assignment, working with the client and food stylist we came up with a series of scenarios and recipes with people enjoying different occasions. We used a large amount of models, all of which I sourced for each set up and photographed them in various locations around Dublin. (And no, that's not Naples but beautiful Howth in the intro' shot above.)

Peas Please!

I'd never seen a field of peas before until Batchelors asked me to photograph one of their ‘pea’ suppliers farms. It was a fun but tough assignment. A farm growing 35 acres of peas that had just come into flower. You might remember that the weather last summer was atrocious. The delicate flowers were getting a battering from the unclement wind and rain. Luck was on our side. We got a chink in the weather and I spent a late afternoon and a sunrise morning shooting the impressive crop before the clouds came back and sucked all the light away.

Christmas Caption Competition - And the winner is...!

15 Minutes of Fame Used Up on Coast to Coast TV!

The crew from 'Capital D' ( An RTE programme about whats on in the capital, Dublin) ran a little piece about Phizzfest - Phibsborough Arts Festival and put in a little slot about a recent series of photographs I did for an earlier Phizzfest. Philip Bromwell who wrote, shot and edited the piece gave a great incite into the diverse festival that finished up last weekend.

'Bleak Beauty' Exhibition shows for July 2011.

Here is a series of photographs that I have been working on over the last 10 years -  photographing Bull Island and its environs. Showing an 'edgyness' not usually associated with landscape photography, the prints display an unsentimental view of the man made Island and structures of the area. The exhibition runs from 1 July until 23 July 2011 at 'darc space' 26 North Great Grorges St., Dublin 1 and is part of PhotoIreland Festival 2011.

Portrait exhibition gets second airing.

The award winning portraits I did for last years Phizzfest - Phibsborough Arts Festival,
are being shown again in Woodstock Cafe, 156 Phibsborough Rd., Dublin 7, on invitation from Phizzfest 2011.
The feedback last year was over whelming and I am delighted to have the opportunity to show the work again. It is an on going project and nine new portraits are been shown for the first time at this event.

New O2 Modem Campaign.

It was interesting to see the final use of the modem shot I did for O2 recently. Such clever use of a marker to give a sense of the dynamic to the simple shot. The power of the magic marker.

Michaél Ó Muircheartaigh- Portrait of a legend.

A definite highlight for me in 2010 was to get the opportunity to take the portrait of one of Ireland's living legends - Michaél Ó Muircheartaigh on his retirement as Gaelic Games commentator for Irish TV and radio. Now eighty years old, at the time of the portrait, Michaél's warmth was immediately apparent. We used the magnificent Croke Park for our location, where he first commentated on a Railway Cup Final on St Patricks Day 1949. It was an honour for me to spend some time with Michaél.
The final portraits were used for the cover of The Croke Park Annual 2010, and to illustrate the accompanying article.

My favourite Michaél Ó quote:  'Sean Óg Ó hAilpin... his father is from Fermanagh. His mother is from Fiji - neither a hurling stronghold.'

O2 Mobile Phone Christmas Campaign.

I was delighted to be chosen to shoot a range new mobile phones for O2 for their Christmas 2010 campaign. Mobile phones are very tricky little items to photograph - think of photographing a mirrored box with all lights showing and all information on screen legible. 2 Bronze Medals for International Aperture Photographic Award

Yippee. I've won two bronze awards for 2 portraits I entred into the 2010 International Aperture Awards - withentries from 91 different countries. Two out of three portraits I entred won bronze - they all should have won gold or platinum but there you go! PORTRAIT EXHIBITION

I've just put up a series of 12 portraits from my local area on display for Phizzfest - The inaugural Phibsborough Art Festival. ( Check out their great programme at - http://www.phizzfest.ie  )
Using Patrick Kavanagh's poem 'Epic' as a starting block I photographed my neighbours and local business men. These portraits hang with an amazingly diverse selection of other artists work.  It is happening on the 3rd floor of the tower in Phibsborough shopping centre - opening hours between 6 and 8pm each evening (except Thursday opening night for more events.) Also over next weekend 10am to 5pm. Well worth a visit.

Small World.

   If you have a moment for a coffee in Bewleys I recommend you to visit the current exhibition in Bewleys Cafe Theatre. Small World is the creation of Paddy Campbell - successful business man turned sculpture and artist. A series of everyday scenarios, cafe scene, beach scene, train carriage and so on, are recreated in one third life size scale. Beautifully quirky. The individual sculptures come alive when you peek in on them from different vantage points. I spent 2 days working with Paddy photographing the different sets. The photographs were used for a beautiful catalogue, invitations, posters and banners.

Passion and Politics

The latest exhibition to open in the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, Passion and Politics, opened recently, showing the work of Sir John Lavery. I photographed the £100 note that is now been used all around the city to publicise the event. A very large high resolution file was produced and supplied to the design team working on invites, banners and large format posters as well as the exhibition catalogue. Highly colour critical images of a selection of Lavery's portraits were supplied also for the catalogue.

 Go visit this historically, very interesting exhibition and see if you don't melt under the eyes of the beautiful and prototype celebrity Lady Lavery.

Latest IPUT Annual Report

Irish Property Unit Trust (IPUT) recently published their latest annual report. They spotted the Samuel Beckett Bridge photograph from my earlier blogs(see below) and used it to great affect on the cover.
