Iveagh Trust Museum Flat.

I worked with the Iveagh Trust photographing some of their properties around the city of Dublin.

The Trust was set up in 1890 by Edward Guinness, the first Lord Iveagh, to alleviate the housing crisis in Dublin.

In 1907 Nellie Molloy was born in Flat 3. Nellie lived there for her whole life and passed away in 2002. Along with her family the Iveagh Trust decided that Molly's flat be kept as she had left it . Over the years Molly had gratefully turned down offers by the Trust to upgrade her flat. As a result we have this wonderful time capsule, The Museum Flat in the Iveagh Buildings where time has stood still. You can arrange a visit to the flat yourself if you call the Iveagh Trust for an appointment.

The Bite Project

The Bite Project is a series of beautiful portraits of people involved in the many different aspects of food in Ireland. Ranging from growers to food critics, urban gardeners to chefs, waitress to food historian ... a really diverse range of both people and roles. We had such great fun photographing this lovely group of people. I would like to say thank you to each of them for the patience and great humour during the shoot. The thirty portraits were exhibited at Taste of Dublin 2014. Food styling was done by Johan van der Merwe. And a really excellent make up job by Brian Ward. I can't believe it is so long since last post!

New Exhibition - All things undying. Opens June 26th.

'All things undying' is a series of photographs from the War Memorial Park in Islandbridge, Dublin. It was built to commemorate the dead of the First World War, later the soldiers who died in the Second World War were also acknowledged.
During nightly winter walks in the War Memorial I was struck by the strange beauty and quiet of the location.The granite buildings and monuments lit by the sodium lamps from the roadway and occasional moonlight. The structures eerily appeared and disappeared in the darkness. Thoughts moved easily to the bleak horror of war and the first world war trenches. Thoughts of the misery suffered by the young men who never made it home. The absolute waste of young lives.
I look at this beautifully kept memorial as an outstanding place of contemplation and beauty but also see it as something inadequate when compared to the sacrifice of these men. 

The title of the exhibition, 'All things undying', is taken from the extract of Rupert Brooke's poem 'Safety' and is inscribed under the cupola by the River Liffey.

'Becalmed' is a single piece made up of 9 images.  I was struck by the intense beauty of the flat sea where only a gentle breeze disturbed the reflection of the sky. When I saw the final images I was moved and excited by there beauty and meditative quality. While widely contrasting with the War Memorial work in style and technique, the innate sense of the contemplative profoundly connects the two works. 

All things undying is open week days from 10.00am to 5.30pm. And Saturdays from 12 noon until 3.00pm. The exhibition ends 18th July.

And I'd like to thank my great, great granny and my mom and......

For a second time over the last couple of years my photography has been recognised in international competition.  Yes, 'Honorable Mention" in The Photography Masters Cup.  More than 8500 entries form 89 countries. So not bad really. Next year I'll go for gold! 'Promise' was shot for an exhibition last year 'Punt Nua' as a response to the economic down turn.

Horta Writing Centre

Being dragged away to a spectacular location two hours inland from Barcelona could hardly be deemed a chore. Thats what happened last September. Fours days shooting in a most beautiful location - Horta de Sant Joan. The sun shone throughout the whole experience, lighting up the rocky mountains, the vineyards, the olive groves. Stupendous. Meeting the very friendly and extremely helpful people from the town was an unexpected bonus, they helped us out in every way they could. The project was shot for a creative writing centre - http://www.hortawriting.com - which has recently opened their school and guest house to visitors. Well worth checking out. And look at their impressive list of tutors.

Fresh Fruit

A lovely selection of labels for Dunnes Stores Yogurts. It is nice to get such lovely subject matter to photograph. Not that all the fruit was in season at the time of shooting. Nevertheless we got a lovely series of close up images that could appear on any poster as well as their intended labels.
