Bringing Home the Bread.

It is lovely to see an enterprise working like a finely tuned machine. I can admire the teamwork, the skill and dedication of all those involved in Coghlans Bakery. They produce breads and pastries for the Food Service sector. I have learned that each type of bread has a strictly adhered to recipe, every pinch added makes a big difference to the final bread so a huge skill base is involved in putting your bread roll and pastry on your plate. The bakers and the workforce here work with great precision and good humour. It is a lovely thing to see and experience.

Views from St Patricks Cathedral

Sometimes I am reminded as to what a privilege working as a photographer can be. One of the really great things is that you get to places most people would never get to see. I was working with the Iveagh Trust, celebrating 125 years since they were founded by Lord Iveagh of the Guinness dynasty. In an effort to match an angle from a photograph taken more than 100 years ago, when the Bull Alley complex of social housing was been built, we got access to the roof of St Patrick's Cathedral. The views were as spectacular as the weather. Because of the trees we had to go much higher than the original angle to get see Bull Ally and the remaining landmarks such as the steeple of Christ Church and the near by Synod and St Werburghs to the right of the photographs. Both the old and new photographs make up the centre spread of the Iveagh Trust 2015 Annual Report.

Elementary My Dear Watson

Wonderland Theatre Company, with the powerhouse of Alice Coghlan, have produced a new adaption of Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. We had a very productive evening on the 'moors' recently. Having located a suitable location - both visually and logistically, we set about producing a series of portraits of the great sleuth Sherlock Holmes(Colm Kenny Vaughan) and his side kick Doctor Watson(Niall O'Brien). Shooting from dusk into night, using artificial lighting, made for an interesting shoot where both Holmes and Watson and the whole crew behaved impeccably.
Look out for 'Dinner Theatre' and Wonderland's The Hounds of the Baskervilles for a lovely night out in Dublin.

Michie Sushi

I spent a day with the Michie Sushi crew in Sandyford. Michel Piare and partner Anna van Exel have made Michie Sushi one of Irelands top Sushi restaurants and a wonderful place to eat Japanese food and also order your favourite take aways. They have won a huge collection of awards for their sushi. Photographing the crew and the food was real fun. There is a lovely work atmosphere in the branch I worked in in Sandyford. Check out latest branch in IFSC. And how cool for a photographer that Michel has a near identical twin brother Mike working with him.  All I can say is lovely people and great food.

International Color Awards Nomination

These guys seem to like my work. It is the 3rd nomination in their portrait/people section I have been awarded over the last few years. With more than 5,600 entries from 78 countries, it not bad to get a nomination. The shot they chose was one from a series of portraits made in the Cast Art Foundry last year. Wish me luck!

So Simple. So Tasty. The 12 Oysters of Christmas.

A very happy Christmas to you and a joyous New Year.
Here are the '12 Oysters for Christmas' recipes.
So simple. So tasty.

1. Au Naturel:
Just as it says. Open that oyster and slurp it down. A squirt of lemon if you wish. And followed by a glass of stout. Such a great combination.

2. Finely diced watermelon and cucumber. Sprinkle on oyster. Eat.

3. Blanche and finely chop parsley with capers. Add a dash of cream and grill.

4. Tabasco & Lemon. So simple. A dash of Tabasco and a squeeze of lemon.

5. Stout Batter Oyster. A tad more effort but worth it. 120g plain flour, 1 egg and enough stout to make pasty batter. Dip oyster flesh in batter and fry till crispy gold.

6. Japanese Sushi Style. Dress the oyster with pickled ginger and a spot of wasabi and a squeeze of lime.

7. Mix chopped fresh tarragon with crushed black pepper and a dash of tarragon vinegar.

8. Spicey! Mix soy sauce with one chopped chilli and ginger with a squirt of lime juice.

9. Dice preserved lemon rind with apple and cucumber. Now there's a taste bomb.

10. The Classic Oyster Mignonette. Finely chopped shallot with red wine vinegar and black pepper.

11. Fry crisp bacon pieces and chilli in a pan. Dust the oyster flesh with flour and fry for 30 sec. each side. Serve in the shell.

12. Dip the oyster flesh in a batter(see above) and roll in breadcrumbs. Serve in shell with tartar sauce.

Lovely Food Styling by Johan van der Merwe.

Renowned Architect Des McMahon presented with RIAI Lifetime Achievement Award.

Renowned Irish architect, Des McMahon, has just been presented with the Royal Institute of the Architect of Ireland Lifetime Achievement Award. Des's major projects include award winning Croke Park, the Collins Barracks conversion for the National Museum of Ireland, The Hugh Lane extension to name a few. I spent some time with Des in the RIAI offices in Merrion Square where we worked on a series of portraits of Des with his Lifetime Achievement Medal. He is a lovely man and who has given us some spectacular buildings.

My Portrait Shown in The Louvre in Paris

Well there is Da Vinci or course, Michaelangelo, Titian, Poussin, David, Gauguin, Picasso...that's the Louvre in Paris for you. But I had the honour of having one of the Cast portraits (see below) shown in the Louvre last July at The Fifth Annual Exposure Awards in Paris. The portrait was chosen from amongst thousands and viewed by over 10 million viewers - phew. The work was projected during the award ceremony that took place in the Louvre. Sorry I wasn't there. But nice nevertheless.

And of course the catalogue with so many great portraits. I am honoured to be part of it.

Cast Foundry Portraits

I had the pleasure working with sculptor Paddy Campbell in Cast Foundry in the Liberties in Dublin, recently. When I finished up photographing Paddy's work in progress of 'The Day that Changed Ireland' - a stunning 4 metre high bronze sculpture of the famous rugby line out against England in Croke Park - now ensconced in Shannon Airport, the people in the foundry allowed me to take some shots of them over a couple of days while they worked skillfully at their tasks. Here are the portraits.
Thank you to Leo and all the people working in Cast Foundry for their help and patience.
